Washington – The National Rifle Association called for the placement of armed police officers in every school in the country on Friday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the gun rights lobbying group spoke out following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut last week, which has sparked discussions on gun control throughout the nation.
Wayne LaPierre, the group’s top lobbyist, is quoted by the AP as stating during a news conference, “How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark.”
LaPierre reportedly refused to take questions after speaking at the news conference.
Since the Newtown tragedy, President Barack Obama has called for proposals to reduce gun violence to take to Congress.
