Newtown, Connecticut – A gunman opened fire at a Connecticut elementary school Friday, killing 26 people, including 20 children. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the death toll climbed to 28 after the 20-year-old gunman committed suicide and an additional person was found dead at another scene.
The shooter was reportedly identified as Adam Lanza, whose mother was an elementary school teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown where the incident occurred. Lanza’s mother was one of those killed.
President Barack Obama gave an emotional statement following the shootings stating, “Our hearts are broken today… The majority of those who died were children — beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old.”
Obama is quoted as further stating, “They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, wedding, kids of their own… Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children.”
