Britain’s embattled Prime Minister Liz Truss faced fresh problems on Thursday after a prominent Conservative Party insider said some of her own MPs are considering pushing for two of her former rivals to replace her.

“All kinds of different people are talking about all kinds of different things because the Conservative backbenchers are looking for a possible replacement for (Finance Minister) Kwasi Kwarteng, even a possible replacement for Liz Truss,” Paul Goodman told the BBC.

The former Tory MP, who is the editor of the influential ConservativeHome blog, said that less than 40 days into her tenure, “all sorts of names are being thrown around” to replace the beleaguered leader.

These included former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who opposed Truss for leadership of the Tory party, and “even Boris Johnson,” whom she replaced as prime minister and party leader earlier last month.

“One idea that’s making the rounds is that Penny Mordaunt and Rishi Sunak, who together got pretty much two-thirds of the MP votes (in the leadership contest), agree and essentially take over. “

Mordaunt, a former secretary of defense, also opposed Truss and is currently a member of her government.

Truss appeared in parliament on Wednesday for the first time since her government’s controversial Sept. 23 mini-budget sparked weeks of economic upheaval.

She told MPs she was “absolutely” committed to the pledges made before she became leader to keep current spending going.

But with FX, bond and other markets spooked by the extra borrowing earmarked to pay for mini-budget tax cuts, fears have grown that they will cut government department budgets and add to the unpopular austerity policies of a decade ago will return.

However, Goodman said he was “beginning to question the ability of ministers and Conservative MPs to put together a package of public spending cuts of the magnitude required”.

“And if they do, whether they will be acceptable to the markets or whether the markets will now demand the mini-budget rollback or most of it, Kwasi Kwarteng has just been very very announced lately.”

He said a small number of individual MPs have been calling for the government to reverse Truss’ tax cut policies in recent days.

“I don’t really know if they’re a majority or not, but if I’m right we’ll see the government will have a lot of trouble getting this package of cuts together.”

Secretary of State James Cleverly insisted on Thursday that the government would stick to Kwarteng’s mini-budget.

“It was about making sure taxes get a little bit lower for 30 million people and those are really strong principles. I think we should definitely stick to that.

“All of these things are really crucial to the growth agenda that the PM has put forward,” he said.

His comments followed a meeting between Truss and members of her party on Wednesday.

Truss is the fourth leader of the Conservative Party in seven years.

Johnson was forced to resign from his government in July after dozens of resignations in protest at a series of scandals.
