GrafTech is one of the world’s largest suppliers of graphite electrodes used in electric arc steelmaking, a rapidly growing part of the steel industry due to its relatively low cost and more environmentally friendly facility.

The investigation focuses on GrafTech’s previous assurances that its graphite electrode plants (including GrafTech’s plant in Monterrey, Mexico, which is reported to account for approximately 25% of GrafTech’s total production) offer unique competitive advantages and that there will continue to be additional capacity in Monterrey can develop . The company has also reassured investors that it minimizes its environmental footprint and focuses on environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) initiatives.

GrafTech’s assurances may have been called into question on September 16, 2022, when it was revealed that Mexican regulators visited the Monterrey facility on September 15, 2022 to review the facility’s environmental and operating permits and directed the facility to to cease operations within 7 days and found that GrafTech Mexico’s license to operate was no longer in force.
