McDonald’s in Kyiv reopened on Tuesday for the first time since the Russian invasion, a sign that life in the capital is returning to normal after nearly seven months of war.
The U.S. burger chain said in an earlier statement that after discussions with Ukrainian officials, security specialists and suppliers, it would “reopen initially for delivery only.”
AFP reporters saw a line of delivery company employees outside one of the restaurants on Tuesday, waiting to take orders.
“In October, these three restaurants will fully reopen along with McDrive and Express windows,” McDonald’s said in the statement.
“As part of the phased reopening program, seven more stores will open in Kyiv, followed by more restaurants in the capital and other cities in the west of the country,” it added.
McDonald’s suspended operations in Ukraine on February 24 after Russia invaded.
The much-anticipated restart was seen by many Ukrainians as a symbolic show of support as the chain closed in Russia.
McDonald’s sold its Russian restaurants to businessman Alexander Govor earlier this year after announcing a full exit from the country.
The continuation of the work in Russia is “no longer tenable and also incompatible with the values ????of McDonald’s”.
