As preparations progress for next week’s state funeral, the public in London queues for hours to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II when she is in state.

Here’s how the UK plans to bid farewell to the late monarch.

– Thursday 15 September –

The Queen begins her first full day at Westminster Hall as huge crowds line the streets to pay their respects.

The 1,000-year-old building is open 24 hours a day until it closes at 6:30 a.m. (0530 GMT) on Monday, the day of the Queen’s funeral.

The government has warned those waiting “that you will have to stand for many hours, possibly overnight, and have very little opportunity to sit down”.

The queue stretched more than 3 miles early Thursday, following the River Thames into south-east London, past the Tate Modern Museum and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Prince William and his wife Catherine – the new Prince and Princess of Wales – will visit Sandringham, where the Queen used to spend Christmas, to view floral tributes.

Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest son, and his wife Sophie will visit Manchester in north-west England to view the city’s book of condolences.

King Charles III will spend the day at his country estate, Highgrove, in south-west England.

Members of the armed forces rehearse overnight for Monday’s funeral.

– Friday 16 September –

Charles and Camilla visit Wales where a service is being held at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff and he receives a message of condolence at the Senedd, the Welsh National Assembly building.

The visit to Wales concludes trips to all four nations that make up the United Kingdom.

– Sunday 18 September –

A minute’s silence will be observed nationwide at 8pm to mourn the Queen and honor her life of service to the country.

– Monday, September 19 –

The Queen’s coffin will be taken in procession to Westminster Abbey at 11am for a state funeral expected to be watched by millions around the world.

Political leaders and heads of state, including US President Joe Biden, are expected to attend and trigger a major security operation.

After the funeral, the coffin will be taken to Windsor for a televised funeral service at St George’s Chapel, with a private funeral planned for later that evening.

The Queen is buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel along with her husband, Prince Philip, the ashes of her sister Princess Margaret, her mother, also known as Elizabeth, and her father, George VI.
