Once the state mask order expired early Friday, people will no longer be required to wear masks in Connecticut hospitals, outpatient medical facilities and homeless shelters.

Where masks are required by local councils or similar authorities, mask-wearing regulations within schools will remain in place until June 30. However, the Department of Public Health said that after June 30, districts will still have the ability to mandate masks on their own.

Manisha Juthani, the state’s public health commissioner, said: “We are in a much different position than we were in March 2020 because of the tools at our disposal, including COVID-19 vaccines, boosters, state-backed testing sites and self-checks availability.

“While we are learning to live with this virus, we were able to move forward from these orders when we should have been prepared, and these orders have played a very important role,” she said.

The order, which expired at 12:01 am on Friday, originated in January this year and is an extension of the previous order.

In addition to the remaining mask requirements, Juthani announced that two other executive orders will also end on Friday. The orders provide additional time for the temporary licensing of advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants and govern who can get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Also Thursday, Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont signed a bill that would extend until June 30 four former executive orders that had been codified into state law.

They deal with physical distancing in certain congregate settings; provide medical providers with a database of patient vaccinations; use temporary nurse aides to help ease staffing shortages; and provide more time to pay rent to those facing eviction who have applied for the state’s UniteCT program assistance.
