Japanese gaming industry billionaire Kazuo Okada must pay nearly $55 million in attorney fees to Bartlit Beck after the law firm negotiated a $2.6 billion settlement of his dispute with a hotel chain, a federal appeals court ruled Feb. 8.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit unanimously rejected Okada’s claim that he was denied a fundamentally fair proceeding after pulling out of a scheduled arbitration with Bartlit Beck at the 11th hour. The case was on appeal from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
