Yeah, so I know we’ve been discovering new and amazing things weed can do, but it looks like it might really help with the ongoing global pandemic. Honestly, I was trying to think of something to write about, so I started my research and I immediately came across some articles that appeared yesterday claiming that cannabis compounds might prevent Covid-19. Well, it’s crazy that it can’t be stopped entirely, but research shows it can have a major impact on infection rates. While this is all new and still somewhat speculative, we might as well take a look at what was reported in recent research.

What do we think is happening?

So scientists at Oregon State University essentially published a study showing that cannabis compounds may have the potential to prevent the virus from penetrating healthy human cells. Isn’t that completely crazy?

The compounds in question are cannabidiolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). These compounds may not be as familiar as the classic compounds, but in essence, they appear to be effective at blocking alpha and beta variants of the virus. The study, published in the journal Nature Products, addresses the fact that the compounds appear to be able to bind to the spike protein found on the virus. This is basically the bit it uses to penetrate healthy cells and generally mess them up. Although we may not be familiar with these cannabis compounds, they are still abundant and extremely common in most, if not all, forms of cannabis. So basically, if these compounds have the potential to stop the spread of Covid-19, even if it’s only the Alpha and Beta variants so far, it could be big news for everyone.

What does it mean?

Basically like almost anything in the early days of scientific testing that we don’t know yet. This basically means that it is possible for scientists to create some form of cannabis-derived medicine that might be able to help us avoid Covid-19. This means that so far, we know that these cannabinoids have effects on Alpha and Beta variants of the virus. This is obviously good news and we should be excited about it, but it doesn’t mean we can directly assume that weed will cure Covid. The acid that binds to the viral spike protein isn’t the same boy that got us excited. Many of you already know that cannabis is an incredibly complex plant that contains all kinds of funny crap. There are cannabinoids like THC and cannabinoid acids like the guy we’re talking about here.read a lot of research Journal of Natural Products I can confidently say that I don’t have a good understanding of most of it because I study English literature and performance, so I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to scientific terminology. However, if you are, I suggest you give it a try to get the full picture of what’s going on in the study.

As I mentioned before, these acids are very capable of blocking the spike protein. Most vaccines and antibody therapies try to do just that. So any new ways we find to make this happen are amazing news. This may stop the infection, but it may also shorten the length and severity of the virus. This, in turn, means that while it may not cure Covid, it has the potential to save many lives.

Does smoking marijuana prevent infection?

The shortest answer is no, no. There was no link between marijuana use and fewer Covid-19 cases, which is not what this study was about. Unfortunately, the masses are already saying on the internet that weed can cure or prevent you from contracting this virus. I couldn’t be more clear about this, that’s not true. We in no way suggest that if you smoke weed, you don’t need to worry about Covid or be that careful, so make sure this isn’t your or anyone else’s conclusion from this news. The last thing we need is more stigma around weed or smokers. This is exactly what will happen if people start claiming that the stoner is a superspreader. So yes, this is a real boon for cannabis-based medical science and testing, but calm down you guys.

what’s next

The major setback to the study is that it has not been tested in humans. We all know that a successful initial test doesn’t mean humans will see the same benefits. At this stage, they only knew that the acid had an effect on the virus in the test tube. However, this is a good starting point and hopefully they can move on to some real-world testing. We do know that these compounds can be taken orally, so hopefully at some stage they can be used to create a form of treatment suitable for human consumption. Hopefully, if this is successful, it will also lead to more serious research into the abilities of cannabis. Of course, we’ve been researching the medicinal properties of weed for a long time, but it’s still woefully underfunded. Who knows, if we manage to use cannabis to help end this protracted global pandemic, there might be more focus on what the plant can do if we look back at its most basic uses. We can only hope for further research and testing after this article is published.

Again, no one claims that weed can cure Covid. Only helps with the presence of precarboxylated acids, so setting the weeds on fire will actually destroy them. Definitely keep smoking, wear a mask and stay safe.
