Mercy’s new CEO announces top management team

On Wednesday, Mercy announced a list of executives who will serve under new president and CEO Steve Mackin.

When McGinn takes over as CEO, five current executives at the St. Louis-based nonprofit health system will be promoted to the top leadership team in April, the company said in a statement Press ReleasesFor the first time in Mercy’s history, three physicians will lead the system’s care delivery operations in clinics, hospitals and virtual care, Mackin said.

“As we make these appointments, the question I want to answer is, ‘How do we drive better clinical care in any hospital or clinical procedure?’ Outpatient clinic, and drive the continuum of care that makes the most sense for how we serve our patients,” he said.

Shannon Sock, currently executive president of strategy and chief financial officer, will become chief operating officer and chief strategist. During his 20 years at the company, Sock oversaw the adoption of electronic health records and the establishment of Mercy Virtual. One of Sock’s new responsibilities is to manage the health system’s accountable care organization and its transition to value-based care, Mackin said.

Cardiologist Dr. John Morhart will be the first doctor to be named president of the charitable community. “He made a huge contribution to standardization and innovative cost savings,” McGinn said. “He has led our work in our quality and safety program and our clinical work throughout Mercy’s pandemic.”

Cheryl Matejka will take over as Sock’s Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Ajay Pathak will become the new Senior Vice President and Chief Strategic Ventures Officer and will focus on expanding the health system’s outpatient and retail businesses.

Dave Thompson, who manages Mercy’s value-based care contracts, will assume the newly created role of senior vice president of strategic integration, where his responsibilities will include overseeing the health system’s risk-taking contracts

Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer, Dr. Jeff Ciaramita, Dr. Gavin Helton, Joe Kelly, Kevin Minder, Betty Jo Rocchio and Phil Wheeler will continue in Mercy’s current roles.
