Jerry Lynn is here. Yves asked me to put this message at the top of today’s link:
Yesterday, when I wrote that my mother went to the hospital, I added in an earlier version: “I don’t think she will go home.
Facts have proved that this is correct. She died at 1:20 pm on Christmas Day.
Although she suffers from early dementia, it only appears in the usually poor short-term memory. She still has a complicated vocabulary, makes cynical observations, and can actively argue when it suits her…until she sprained her knee two weeks ago. She was bedridden afterwards. Although she could recover, she always refused to exercise and physical therapy. After setting the boundary conditions, she seems to have given up, which means that she will spend the rest of her life in a hospital bed, whether at home or in a facility.
I didn’t see her on her last day. I was scheduled to come this afternoon. The hospital has strict Covid regulations. There is only one visitor at a time, and there are two visitors a day. So the assistant during the day, a former New York City taxi driver who likes to handle everything and sometimes quarrels with my mother, is taking morning and afternoon meals. Earlier. My mother had a chest X-ray in the morning, and all the treatment of her made her weak.
She told her assistant many times that she was dying today, and the assistant and later nurse told her not to talk like that. My mother recently started saying that she was going to die soon, so the assistant was not as serious as she thought.
She rested for a while, and then told her assistant that she wanted her to leave. She knew she couldn’t sleep there. The plan is to have the assistant come back later.
She was obviously walking fast. Her heartbeat dropped sharply, and they couldn’t wake her up. The hospital claimed that they did not know why she died, but given the sudden failure, their best guess was a heart attack, and she seemed more energetic than the day before…before the AM chest X-ray.
I can’t give her Christmas cards and gifts. In all things, this is nagging me.
