Canada becomes the cornerstone of the North American battery supply chain
source: Bloomberg
North America has all the key ingredients needed for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles: nickel, cobalt, lithium, and graphite.
Britishvolt, a battery manufacturing startup based in the United Kingdom, plans to build a 60GWh factory in Quebec. Stromvolt, a start-up company headquartered in Canada, plans to build a 10GWh factory in Ontario. Combined with the announcement south of the border, North America plans to build more than 400GWh of production capacity within this decade. This is still lower than the region’s annual demand of 508GWh by 2030, so more announcements are expected.
Once a country has battery manufacturing capabilities, as suppliers approach their customers, other component manufacturing industries will often follow suit. Therefore, Canada is now building a strong domestic battery supply chain.
