An official from the government of Zimbabwe recently confirmed that the government is currently collecting the opinions of knowledgeable people on cryptocurrencies.
The government’s lingering worry
Charles Wekwete, head of the e-government department, suggested that the country will take a formal position on cryptocurrencies only after the consultation process is completed.
According to Sunday News report, Wekwete addressed the delegates participating in the IT summit held in Victoria Falls-made a comment in response to the inquiries of the attendees. Participants asked Wekwete whether the Zimbabwean government’s position on cryptocurrencies has changed.
In his response, Wekwete first reiterated his government’s lingering concerns about cryptocurrencies and fears that these might be used to promote evil activities. However, Wekwete still continues to reveal that the Zimbabwean government has been working hard to find a suitable cryptocurrency regulatory framework. The report quoted Wekwete as saying how this process was carried out:
Therefore, the government has established a mechanism to try to collect opinions from all walks of life in order to finally formulate policies. The Minister of Finance and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe have issued statements that this is such a complex area. The government will issue a statement sooner or later, but we are not there yet, and the negotiation process is already in progress.
The government is open to the ideas of private sector participants
In addition to the ongoing consultation process, Wekwete stated that his government is still open to the ideas of private participants who are not currently involved in the process.
At the same time, the report also quoted Allan Saruchera, chairman of the Zimbabwe Computer Association and one of the participants, expressing the organization’s willingness to help the government. Saruchera recommends that knowledgeable people in the IT department believe that they have a responsibility to “share and show what can be done.”
