According to the latest “US News and World Report” rankings, the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and the Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center are the 13th best hospitals in the United States.

The Philadelphia Hospital as a joint venture rose two places from last year, when the publication was ranked 15th among the top 20 hospitals in the year. In 2019, the hospital and Mayo Clinic-Phoenix tied for 18th place.

U.S. News and World Report analyzed nearly 5,000 hospitals and ranked them according to 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. The ranking is based on factors such as patient outcomes, patient experience, and hospital staffing.

Majors include cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, psychiatry, pulmonology and lungs Surgery, rehabilitation, rheumatology and urology.

The latest version includes ratings for seven new procedures and conditions: Heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, diabetes, kidney failure, hip fracture, and spinal fusion.

The procedures and conditions are extended to U.S. News Editor-in-Chief Benhard told the Voice of Philadelphia that after consulting a doctor, patients find the best hospital based on their specific clinical needs. He added that considering pneumonia is a manifestation of COVID-19, pneumonia is more important than ever.

The health equity measures in each hospital are also new. These scores are calculated by looking at the demographics of patients undergoing extensive elective surgery and the racial and ethnic diversity of the surrounding communities.

Health equity measures are not part of the best hospital rankings. Harder said they found that race and ethnic minorities were underrepresented in many hospitals.

HUP and Penn Presbyterian are operated by Penn Medicine and are ranked nationwide among 12 adult specialties in the country, including otolaryngology at 6th, pulmonology and lung surgery at 8th, and diabetes and cancer at 10th. They also scored high in two adult majors and 16 programs and conditions.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has received national rankings in six adult majors including ophthalmology, orthopedics, cancer and diabetes, and endocrinology. They also scored high in three adult specialties and 14 procedures and conditions (including stroke and knee replacement).

The Wells Eye Hospital maintained its second position in the field of ophthalmology. The Rothman Institute ranks high in three procedures and conditions, including back surgery, knee replacement and hip replacement. MossRehab is part of the Einstein Healthcare Network and is ranked in the top 10 for rehabilitation.

Fox Chase Cancer Center received a national ranking in urology and received high scores for cancer, lung cancer surgery, and colon cancer surgery.
