Ocean Beach, California-For Susan Norman, this is a leap that spans 81 years.

On Monday, the San Diego Foundation for the Prevention of Drowning and the San Diego Junior Lifeguard hosted the return of the SDJG Pier from the Ocean Beach Pier. The feature of the event is that many swimmers including Norman jump into the water to raise funds for the foundation, provide junior lifeguard scholarships and free swimming courses for underserved youth in the community.

The foundation stated that Norman was the first man in his eighties to dive.

“I like to do things like this,” Norman said. “I mean, I like it, but it makes me nervous to know if I can do it, because I haven’t done anything like this in many years.”

But she is no ordinary grandmother. Norman participated in triathlon competitions and even won triathlon competitions in her department. The accomplished woman on the water said she wanted to indulge in 25-foot diving with her grandsons Noah and Calvin.

When asked if he ever thought his grandmother would jump off the dock with him, her grandchildren agreed: “No!”

“I was shocked,” Calvin said.

The foundation charges non-lifeguard participants a fee of $100 per jump to raise funds for the education of local young people. According to a senior lifeguard, 600 people jumped from the dock and raised tens of thousands of dollars with the help of the jump.

As for the 9-year-old Noah, he did give his grandmother some advice at the last minute.

“Just don’t stretch out your arm, or your arm may sting for the rest of your life,” he said.
