Jazmine Sullivan’s fourth album “Heaux Tales” won the Album of the Year award at the 2021 BET Awards on Sunday night.

The 14 EPs of the singer-songwriter received this honorary nomination along with albums released by The Weeknd, Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Nas and Chloe X Halle.

Sullivan and her mother came to the stage to receive the award. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and is now in remission. The musician said that, given the events of the past two years, they “never thought they would be here” and “did not see anything like this happen.”

“[My mom] It’s my prize, this is my gift,” Sullivan said. “She is with me more than anything else. She has always supported me. She has been pushing me and guiding me throughout my life, so I am very grateful to her. “

The 34-year-old Philadelphian also dedicated this honor to black women.

“This award is bigger than me,” Sullivan said. “This is for all women. All black women are amazing and strong. They have always inspired me. I am very happy to be able to tell part of our story. I hope I am proud of you.”




At the awards ceremony on Sunday night, Sullivan also sang her new single “Tragic” and a hit song from the album called “On It”. The lead singer is singer Ari Lennox.




Sullivan was also nominated as the best female R&B singer this year, but lost to HER

When it was released in January, “Heaux Tales” ranked No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for the first time. It became Sullivan’s highest chart album and the second top 10 album in her career after her debut album “Fearless” in 2008.

“Heaux Tales” also ranked first on the Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart for the first time, and ranked second on the Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. This is Sullivan’s first record since the 2015 “Reality Show”.
