(NEXSTAR)-On Saturday morning, several cyclists in Arizona were seriously injured after a driver crashed into a group of cyclists participating in the “Bike the Bluff” event in Show Low City.
The suspect is a 35-year-old white male who tried to drive his black Ford Super Duty truck to escape the scene. He was shot and killed by police about one mile from the scene, behind Ace Hardware.
According to the Show Low police station, the collision occurred at approximately 7:25 am. The driver’s vehicle hit a number of cyclists. At least six of them were taken to the local medical center by emergency rescuers. One of them was airlifted from the scene. Four of them are in critical condition and the remaining two are in critical but stable condition.According to reports, two or three more minor injured victims were admitted as walk-in Show low police.
The suspect is also in critical but stable condition.
The police wrote in a statement: “Our community is shocked by this incident. At this time, our hearts and prayers are with the injured and their families.” Press release, Also shared by the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office.
The press release notes that the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team in Navajo County is also on “standby” to provide support.
Officials at Timber Mesa Fire urge local motorists to be extra careful when driving near the scene of a “mass casualty incident” on Saturday morning. The road at the site of the incident has also been closed.
Show Low police stated that the investigation is ongoing.
