The two recently charged with the death of a Saskatchewan Royal Mounted Police officer appeared in court in Regina on Monday morning.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced on Sunday evening that 41-year-old Alphonse Stanley Traverse and 42-year-old Marlene Velma Louis Page both face multiple charges for the death of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Shelby Patton, who was killed while on duty at 8 AM CST on Saturday morning.
These allegations include manslaughter, failure to park after an accident that resulted in death, theft of motor vehicles, and possession of more than $5,000 in stolen property. Pagee was also accused of possession of methamphetamine.
Both appeared in the Regina Provincial Court on Monday morning. Both Pagee and Traverse told the judge that they understood the allegations. Pagee’s case was postponed to 2pm CST on Friday so that she could obtain legal advice. Traverse’s case was postponed to Monday, June 21, at 2 pm Central Standard Time.
Police said Patton opened a traffic stop in Wolseley, Sask, 95 kilometers east of Regina, when he was following a truck stolen from Manitoba. According to police, Patton was hit by a truck when he was approaching on foot. A passerby tried to resuscitate Button, but failed.
According to the police, the two defendants fled the scene and were arrested on a farm in Francistown before 10 am Central Standard Time.
According to court documents, Traverse has several outstanding legal matters in Manitoba and has previously been convicted of breaking into and possessing property obtained from crime.
Pagee also has unresolved issues and previous convictions, including fleeing a sheriff, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of criminally acquired property.
Button has been a police officer with the RCMP for more than six years. Since 2015, he has worked in the head detachment of India. Prior to this, he performed tasks in Parliament in February and March 2015.
They must certainly respond to these allegations, let us hope they throw the book to them.-The grandmother of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Linda Patton, was killed while on duty
On Monday morning, just a few hours after the RCMP announced that they had filed the charges, Patton’s grandmother Linda Patton said that their family received some comfort knowing that the suspect would have to face the court.
“This is really a terrible thing, as if it shouldn’t have happened,” she said. “They must definitely respond to these allegations, let us hope they throw the book to them.”
She said the condolences the family received from the community and across Canada helped them through this tragic period. Patton is remembered as a thoughtful and dedicated policeman who loves his work and family.
“We are so grateful for people’s support,” she said. “It’s too much.”
Witnesses said the vehicle was dragging Button
Frederick Runns said he saw what happened in a nearby apartment. Runns told CBC News that he saw two people getting into the car and started trying to leave because the police told them to stop and take out their guns. Then the vehicle turned suddenly.
“They beat him and dragged him,” Runns said. “That’s what you don’t want to see.”
Runns stated that the officer was dragged about 20 meters.
“The officer’s car is still moving and the lights are still on,” said Regan O’Watch, Runns’ wife. “The body is at the end of the street.”
Runns said that he and his wife had already started to lock the door, and it was terrible to think that this would happen in a small town where everyone is friendly.
“Nothing like this has ever happened here,” Runns said.
The fake GoFundMe was shut down by the website
The RCMP said that Patton’s family notified them of a fraudulent GoFundMe page on Sunday night, stating that the page was created in Patton’s name.
The RCMP reminded people not to promote or fund the activity on this page, which is run by an account called Sam Joseph. The RCMP stated that they had informed GoFundMe that the account was fake and the page was disabled on Monday morning. The event raised $1,540.
