WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR)-As the United States faces more cybersecurity attacks, lawmakers have stated that the country needs to strengthen its defenses to withstand attacks.

“This is an issue that actively seeks to prevent cyber attacks,” Rep. Brian Higgins (DN.Y.) said.

Higgins and other lawmakers stated that the United States cannot allow cyber attacks to continue nationwide.

“External interests and the ability of other countries to cause harm to Americans and the US economy is very real,” Higgins said.

As New York City subways and colonial pipelines became victims of these cyberattacks, Congress wanted to strengthen security.

“The best way is to invest in cybersecurity and encourage companies to do the same,” Higgins said.

Senator Tim Kane (D-Va.) said he and his colleagues are working on legislative solutions.

“You will see network investment in the National Defense Act, and I also think you will see it becoming more and more important in our ongoing infrastructure discussions,” Kane said.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle also want President Joe Biden to put pressure on Vladimir Putin to stop cyberattacks.

“When the cyber attack comes from Russia, I can assure you that President Putin knows exactly what happened,” said Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kan.).

Marshall said that when the United States knows where these attacks are coming from, it will not be complacent.

“In these communist countries, these cyber attacks are encouraged. I think the Communist Party empowers them and helps them,” Marshall said.

Marshall said that Congress and the government need to jointly establish cyber security protection measures.
