Edmonton-On Saturday night, Governor Jason Kenney launched Alberta’s COVID-19 vaccination raffle on Twitter to help motivate people to get vaccinated and move to the next Reopening stage.
Among the other prizes, there will be three prizes of USD 1 million. The first prize will be open to all Albertans 18 years and older who received the first dose before the province reached the 70% threshold required to enter Phase 3 of the reopening program.
He said: “Thank you 68% of Albertans for doing their best to get at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.” “Thanks to you, we defeated the spring peak of COVID-19 and our lives are beginning to return to normal.”
Kenny added in the video message that the province has “insufficient demand” for vaccines.
“That’s why Alberta announced today that we will start the summer vaccine lottery,” he said.
Since May, the governor has stated that the province may provide some form of vaccine incentives to increase vaccination rates.
According to the Prime Minister, more details about the other awards will be announced next week, and how the other two US$1 million prize draws will be awarded.
Kenny said that the future savings of residents who have not been infected or spread COVID-19 will “easily” pay lottery tickets.
Kenny said: “We only need to promote those who have not yet started vaccinations.” “Please do your part, because vaccination now is your $1 million injection.”
Several companies in Alberta provide allowances, discounts, and free food or beverages for those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. The University of Lethbridge launched a competition to provide free tuition for nine lucky vaccinated students.
As of Saturday, approximately 68.5% of eligible people in Alberta had received the first dose of the vaccine—an increase of 0.7% since Friday.
More than 19% of Alberta’s population of 12 years and older are fully vaccinated, which is 16.3% of the province’s total population.
To enter Step 3 of the reopening plan, 70% or more of Albertans need to receive the first immunization.
The third phase will remove all remaining public health restrictions and allow indoor social gatherings. It will take effect two weeks after reaching the vaccine threshold.
At the beginning of Phase 3, the winners of the first batch of US$1 million lottery tickets will be drawn.
According to the governor’s office, 64,535 people booked the first dose in the next 7 days. The government expects Alberta will reach the 70% threshold required for Phase 3 and begin a two-week waiting period until it reopens on June 18.
Secretary of Health Taylor Sandro said in a statement: “Our province has achieved extraordinary achievements in the arrival and use of the COVID-19 vaccine.” It’s a perfect fit. This lottery is an investment in the economic future of Alberta and our province.
“I believe we will see an eventual rise in vaccination, allowing us to cross the finish line and gain widespread immunity.”
