The small boat carrying 90 people left Libya on Sunday and sank off the coast of Tunisia the next day.

On Monday, a ship from northern Libya sank. At least 57 migrants and refugees drowned off the coast of Tunisia. Another 33 people were rescued by workers on an oil platform.

Mohamed Zekri, a spokesman for the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, said on Tuesday that the ship capsized in Sfax on the southeast coast of Tunisia.

He said personnel on the oil platform alerted the authorities when they saw the ship was going down, and naval units were also sent in to search the water for missing passengers.

Monday’s incident is at least the fifth deadly ship that Tunisia has sunk in recent months, involving migrants fleeing conflict or poor living conditions.

At the beginning of this month, after their ship sank off the coast of Tunisia, 17 migrants were drowned and two were rescued.

In recent weeks, more than 60 migrants and refugees have died in similar incidents off the coast of Tunisia.
