As wildfires threaten the northern end of the city, Prince Albert and the Buckland Rural City Council in Saskatchewan have ordered partial evacuation.

Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dione said that 36 houses are currently affected, but if the wind changes, people have been told hundreds of people are ready to evacuate.

People living and working north of Highway 55, east of Cloverdale Road, and west of Honeymoon Road are required to use Highway 2 to evacuate and find their homes. People are taken to the Margo Fournier Centre, 111 West Street, where they will be required to register and receive further instructions.

On Monday night, Marilyn Boyer packed valuables from her dream garden (Garden of Dreams Greenhouse), and a fire swept across her Highway 55.

She said: “Now, this is very scary. We are right across from the fire, if it jumps over the highway, we will…” “I now have my photos and everything like that. Ready to evacuate. Scary. This. It’s really scary.”

The Prince Albert City Council voted at 6:30 pm local time to declare a local emergency because the fire is in danger of spreading and immediate action is required.

A spokesperson for the Prince Albert Fire Department said that city staff were fighting with the Changqing Road area north of Prince Albert, passing by the Red River Park.

The spokesperson said people were asked to avoid the area and residents had been evacuated from “as many locations as possible at the moment.”

The Prince Albert Police Department also asked drivers to avoid the East Highway 55 between Prince Albert and the area around the Pulp Transport Road because of a fire in the area.

Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are helping traffic in the area.

CBC Saskatchewan contacted the nearby Buckland Fire Department, but when the members put out the fire, they could not comment.
