Todd Rundgren can now add the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer to his music career.

The Upper Darby native was one of six performers selected on Wednesday. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2021 introductory class. Tina Turner, Carole King, The Go-Go’s, Jay-Z and Foo Fighters will join the Hall of Fame this year.

Kraftwerk, Charley Patton and Gil Scott-Heron will receive the “Early Impact Award.” The Music Excellence Award will be presented to LL Cool J, Billy Preston and Randy Rhodes. Clarence Avant will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

John Sykes, chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said: “These diverse and talented candidates reflect the rock concert hall’s continued commitment to artists whose music creates the voice of youth culture.”

The 72-year-old Rundgren is One of the 16 nominees in the performer category this year. This is the third consecutive time that Luch Glenn has been nominated for the Hall of Fame. The musician qualified for the competition in 1996, but it was not until 2019 that he was nominated for the first time. He was nominated again in 2020.

The standard for performers is the recognition of bands and solo artists who “created music whose originality, influence and influence changed the course of rock music.” Hall of Fame. In order to be eligible to participate in the concert hall, artists must release their first record 25 years before admission.

An international voting body composed of more than 1,200 artists, including current incumbents, historians and music professionals, all submitted their votes. Factors such as the artist’s musical influence and the length and depth of his career will be considered when voting.

Fans are allowed to participate in the selection process by voting up to five nominees every day on the Hall of Fame website. The top five nominees voted by the public include fan votes and were selected for 2021 along with other votes.

5 million fan votes were cast, but Rundgren did not rank among the top five fan votes. Turner, The Go-Go’s and Foo Fighters all ranked first in the top five voted by fans.

The 36th Annual Induction Ceremony will be held at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland on Saturday, October 30th at 8pm. Tickets will go on sale in July.

SiriusXM’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame radio station will provide radio simulcast. The award ceremony will be broadcast on HBO in the future and also on HBO Max.

Rundgren was born in Philadelphia, grew up in Upper Darby, and graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1965.

According to the Hall of Fame, the artist was influenced by soul, British rock, vocal harmony and singers and songwriters of the 1960s. Among his biggest influences are The Beach Boys and Pink Floyd.

Rundgren founded the music group Nazz in 1967 and joined Bearsville Records as a producer and engineer. In 1970, he won his first 20 hits with his first solo album “Runt”, “We Gotta Get You a Woman”.

Rundgren is best known for his 12 solo albums, 9 albums co-authored with the rock band Utopia in the 1970s and 1980s. His most famous music appeared in 1972, when he released the critically acclaimed “Music/Other Music?” album. This record came to the fore in the two hits “Hello, Me” and “I Saw the Light”.

“Hello, I” is Rundgren’s most attractive song ever, “What/what?” In the past, it was selected into Rolling Stone’s “500 Best Albums of All Time” list September.

Rundgren has also produced albums for Patti Smith Group, Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad and New York Dolls. His music has influenced artists such as Prince and Hall & Oates.

Rundgren continued to perform live. His “Clear Man” tour includes virtual concerts in 25 cities in February and March.
