The Queen speaks publicly for the first time since Philip’s death

When the Queen spoke publicly for the first time since the death of Prince Philip, the Queen joked about her age in a video call.

The 95-year-old monarch was “very proud” of being the first young man to receive a life-saving swimming badge, but joked that “that’s too bad” when he learned that it was 80 years ago.

er Majesty talked about the girlhood she grew up in World War II, and recalled her pride in receiving the Youth Breath Award from the Royal Life Saving Society.

In 1941, she and her sister Princess Margaret took a swim class at the 14-year-old Bath Club on Dover Street in Mayfair. She was only 14 years old.

In a video call with the Royal Life Saving Association today, she said: “I didn’t realize that I was the first. I just did it, and I have to work very hard for it.

“I’m afraid it’s been a long time, I think it has changed a lot.”
