Jagmeet Singh, the latest Federal New Democratic Party leader, said he believes there is a link between anti-mask and anti-blockade protests and far-right extremism.
Singh’s comments come as rallies are being held across the country against the COVID-19 health order, and health professionals are fighting the deadly third wave of pandemic.
He told reporters on Monday: “Boldly failing to abide by public health guidelines puts people at risk. This is what we see in extreme right-wing ideologies.”
Some Canadians said they were frustrated by the lack of police force in anti-lockout demonstrations, and some prime ministers also promised to impose higher fines on COVID-19 violations.
Singh said that some people attracted by the recent protests have connections with far-right organizations.
He said he believes there is a link between people who refuse to follow public health advice and the idea of ??extreme rights, because both practices ignore the well-being of others and put people at risk.
He said: “Of course there is a connection.”
Singh said that refusing to listen to health instructions for COVID-19 is dangerous and needs to be warned.
In an interview with Global News, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi called these demonstrations “a thin-veiled white nationalist and supremacist anti-government protest.”
Last month, a deputy director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network pointed out that more conspiracy theorists and far-right organizations are paying tribute to the anti-lock-in and anti-cover-up movement.
