Roosevelt Boulevard is one of the most important and one of the most dangerous roadways in Philadelphia. It carries millions of vehicles every month and accounts for a large number of car accidents with more than 130 pedestrians being struck causing more than twenty deaths in just five years. Philadelphia car accident lawyer Rand Spear warns pedestrians they need to be careful when crossing the boulevard on a podcast available on YouTube.

Spear says there a couple of reasons why there are so many car accidents and so many deaths occurring every year on Roosevelt Boulevard. It’s very wide so traffic moves quickly, there are many traffic lights and many people live on or near the boulevard that cross it.

“Children live on the expressway or right next to it. They need to cross the street to go to school or to go visit friends and unfortunately so many of the kids are talking on their cell phones or texting and not really paying attention. That’s really the key. You really need to pay close attention when you’re crossing the Roosevelt expressway,” accident attorney Spear says, “It’s just so unfortunate, it’s such a heartache every time we get a call from a family about a child that’s either been very seriously injured or killed on the Roosevelt expressway. It’s a recipe for disaster if you’re not paying attention.”

Spear also suggests you,

·       Should only cross at the crosswalk,

·       Make absolutely sure that the vehicular traffic has come to a complete stop and it’s safe for you to cross, and

·       Not start crossing when the pedestrian light turns yellow. You’re not going to make it to the other side before the light turns red.  Wait for the light to turn green and then start across the street making sure that all traffic coming from all directions has stopped.

Spear says the best way to deal with a car accident is to prevent it. “Make sure that all vehicles are stopped (before you cross). Don’t expect that they’re going to stop because very frequently vehicles are going fast. Sometimes drivers will blow through the yellow light and to catch that light they’ll speed up rather than slow down so don’t expect the vehicles are going to act properly. Pay close attention. To me avoidance is the best medicine of all.”

Accident attorney Spear says that in the more than 30 years that he’s practiced law he’s handled dozens of car accident cases that have occurred on Roosevelt Boulevard. He says when they start conducting an investigation there are important issues they try to resolve, including,

·       Are there any witnesses?

·       Where did the vehicle strike the pedestrian?

·       Was the pedestrian in the crosswalk?

“We really want to make sure we gather as much information as we can at the beginning of the case. As  time goes on memories fade, evidence is not preserved and it’s always best to get as much information as you can,” Spear says.

He says they also try to get their clients proper medical care. “If they need to be in a hospital, if they need to see an orthopedic surgeon or a neurologist, whatever the case may be we want to make sure that they’re getting the best treatment possible.”
