Thailand – A recent truck crash in southern Thailand has resulted in the deaths of 8 students and a pickup truck driver. The Associated Press reported that the truck careened onto a traffic island on Tuesday, running into multiple trees.
According to Police Lt. Sujin Srithong, the accident occurred in Narathiwat. The driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel. Four additional students were hospitalized after the crash and were stated to be listed in serious condition at the time of the report.
The report notes that a number of studies have shown that Thailand ranks high on the list of countries with the most traffic fatalities in the world, second to Nambia a World Health Organization survey states.
Trucks are used frequently for transporting groups of people in the country.
