Florida – Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has made a request that U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle not lift his stay in a case regarding same-sex marriage in the state. As reported by the Miami Herald, if the stay is lifted same-sex couples would be permitted to marry in Florida.
Bondi is quoted as writing in a filing, “The Clerk of Court of Washington County, the Secretary of the Florida Department of Management Services (DMS), and the Secretary of the Florida Department of Health (DOH) (collectively, the ‘Enjoined Officials’), move to continue the stay pending appeal.”
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida is seeking to have the stay lifted so that same-sex couple can wed. Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida, is quoted as stating in response to Bondi’s request, “This is how an attorney general uses the law to serve an ideology and partisan politics, rather than justice.”
According to Simon, if the stay is lifted, Bondi would have an additional week to appeal to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta before the marriages are allowed.
