Florida – A Florida veteran faces foreclosure over his homeowner’s association taking issue with the display of a small flag in his flower pot. As reported by Fox News, 73-year-old Larry Murphree, says the association Tides Condominium at Sweetwater began fining him for the display of the flag $100 per day, and the amount has now totaled to over $8,000.
Murphree, who refused to pay the fees, reportedly reached a settlement with the board in 2012 where he agreed to display the flag in accordance with the association’s rules. However, he said the rules were changed to stipulate that flags could not be placed in flower pots a short time later. The association began fining him last year.
Murphree is quoted as stating to FoxNews.com of the issue, “I’m not going to back down…It’s worth fighting for. It’s a small flag but it stands for a big thank you and it shows the love and respect I have for my country.”
The Tides board released a statement saying that it “has not prohibited any owner from properly displaying an American flag.”
According to Fox News, an attorney for the board, Michelle Haines, has also stated that Murphree’s impending foreclosure is a result of his being delinquent on his monthly payment.
