Philadelphia – A three-year-old child was killed after a metal security door on an Italian ice shop detached and fell. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the child became trapped under the falling grate as several people made attempts to save her.
As noted by the AP, the girl was at Rita’s Water Ice store with her mother when the incident occurred. A sorority and fraternity were hosting a fundraiser and attempted to give her CPR after getting her out from underneath the grate, according to witnesses.
One witness, Tracey Stanford, is quoted as stating to KYW-TV, “It took about 20 to 30 men to get that awning off of the baby…When they finally got it up off of her, she was just lying there, lifeless.”
The child was pronounced dead after being taken to Hahnemann University Hospital.
Linda Duke, a spokeswoman for the parent company of the ice shop, is quoted as stating of the tragedy, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the child’s family…Due to the current investigation we really cannot comment about the unfortunate incident.”
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
