New York – The graphic rap lyrics of a New York man convicted of murder were used against him at his trial. As reported by Reuters, gang member Ronald “Ra Diggs” Herron, 32, was convicted by a federal jury in Brooklyn of 23 charges Thursday, including drug trafficking and three gang-related murders.

Prosecutors alleged that Herron glorified his “criminal lifestyle” in his rap lyrics. Attorneys for Herron stated the lyrics were not an autobiography of his life.

U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch is quoted in the report as saying of Herron in a statement following the verdict, “He styled himself a rap artist, but the jury’s verdict makes clear who Herron really is, a drug dealer and murderer who sought power through fear and intimidation.”

As noted in the report, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, in approximately 18 cases in the U.S. rap lyrics have been introduced and aided in the conviction of defendants.
