Indiana – Police say that a man accused of fatally shooting his wife before turning the gun on himself had previously been accused of raping her at gunpoint. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, Lake County court records show that Remanard Castro, 55, was free on $90,000 bond for related charges when he shot his estranged wife while their two children were present.

Nina Castro had filed for divorce last year, according to court records. She was shot and killed after picking up the couple’s son from school.

Robert Lewis, who represents Remanard Castro in both cases, is quoted in the report as stating, “I told him I thought we had an excellent chance of beating the case… He gave me instructions, as if he was planning on this all moving to a conclusion… I was shocked when I heard what had happened.”

Lewis said he had spoken with his client on the Saturday before the incident and described him as seeming upbeat at the time.
