Utah – Many individuals lost their long-term unemployment benefits on Saturday after the expiration of a federal program that provided funds past the 26 weeks granted by the state. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 3,000 residents of Utah were among the 1.3 million people across the country that saw their benefits cease.

Utah Department of Workforce Services spokesman Nic Dunn is quoted as stating of the expiration of the benefits, “It’s never a good time to lose resources that you’ve been using to help your family…People come into our department at a tumultuous time in their lives. We recognize what they are going through and want to connect them with a job that will get them back to self-sufficiency.”

The five-year program extended benefits for the long-term jobless, and its end is expected to affect hundreds of thousands more people nationwide in the coming months.
