Austin, Texas – A conservative student group announced plans to play a “Catch an illegal immigrant Game” on the University of Texas at Austin campus this week amid protests from many offended by the idea. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Young Conservatives of Texas planned the game for Wednesday, with club members expected to wear signs that say “illegal immigrants” around campus and give $25 gift certificates to students who capture and take them to the group’s recruiting table.
The Texas Democratic Party condemned the game following the group’s announcement.
Lorenzo Garcia, a spokesperson for the Young Conservatives, is quoted by the AP as stating of the game, “The purpose of this event is to spark a campus-wide discussion about the issue of illegal immigration, and how it affects our everyday lives.”
Gregory Vincent, the university’s vice president for diversity, is further quoted as releasing the statement regarding the group’s plans, “The YCT is contributing to an environment of exclusion and disrespect among our students, faculty and staff by sending the message that certain students do not belong on our campus… If the members of YCT carry out their plan … they are willfully ignoring the honor code and contributing to the degradation of our campus culture.”
