Spring City, Pennsylvania – A Methodist church found a pastor guilty of being disobedient and violating church law in a trial on Monday over his decision to officiate at his gay son’s wedding. As reported by Reuters, Reverend Frank Schaefer, pastor of Zion United Methodist testified that his choice to violate the teachings of his denomination were out of love for his child.

Schaefer is quoted by Reuters as stating, “I did not want to make this a protest about the doctrine of the church… I was ready to choose between my son and my career.”

The trial is stated to be the first of its kind since the governing body of the church proclaimed homosexuality to be incompatible with Christian teachings last year, as stated in an article on an official Methodist blog.

The jury is reportedly set to consider what penalty Schaefer should receive for his participation in the ceremony.
