Washington – Eight members of the House were among an estimated 200 people arrested at an immigration rally. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Democratic House members were arrested on Tuesday after protesters blocked a main street near the Capitol during an immigration reform rally.

The names of those arrested have not been released by police. Representatives of other groups in attendance at the rally purported that several of their members were also among those arrested.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney is quoted by the AP as stating of the demonstration, “The enthusiastic demonstration of support for immigration reform this week has proven to Congress that the broad coalition behind commonsense solutions to our nation’s broken immigration laws is as strong as it has ever been…It’s time for the House of Representatives to reopen the government, pay their bills and get back to the important work of moving the economy forward.”
