The case of a 4-year-old girl who was killed in a pedestrian accident that garnered widespread media attention still raises some questions whether the outcome would have been different had there not been a delayed response from 911 emergency services. As reported by the New York Times, the mother of the young child has expressed intentions to file a lawsuit against New York City alleging that her child’s death may not have occurred if not for the delay.
The child, Ariel Russo, died after being struck by an SUV while walking with her grandmother to school on a sidewalk in Manhattan. The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle lost control during a police chase, causing him to run into the child and her grandmother. The grandmother was also injured in the incident but not fatally.
Although the cause of the accident remains under investigation and has been a source of debate, there has been an acknowledgement by city officials that there was a four-minute delay in the dispatch of an emergency vehicle to the scene of the accident.
Sofia Russo, 26, the mother of the 4-year-old, is quoted by the New York Times as stating in a news conference after her attorneys filed a notice of claim against the city, “No amount of money can take us back to our lives… But this lawsuit can force the city to be more careful and prevent this from happening again to anyone else.”
