Chicago – The Chicago Teachers Union has filed a lawsuit against the City of Chicago School District alleging racism is a factor in school closure plans. As reported by Reuters, two lawsuits have been filed in federal District Court requesting that the closings scheduled to be effective prior to the next school year in September be stopped.

The teachers union is quoted in the report as stating of the lawsuit, “The 54 schools selected … for closing have a combined enrollment of 125 white students out of a total enrollment of 16,059 students – less than 1 percent.”

Union President Karen Lewis is quoted in the report as stating, “This city has worked systematically to undermine our public education system and destabilize certain communities.”

Becky Carroll, a spokeswoman for the school district, is further quoted as stating, “Instead of offering up solutions, CTU (Chicago Teachers Union) continues to protect a status quo that doesn’t put our children first.”
