Oregon – An 11-year-old cancer survivor caught fire while being a patient at an Oregon hospital. As reported by ABC News, the young girl, Ireland Lane, had been hospitalized at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for a head injury and was painting in her room when the fire occurred.
Dr. Stacy Nicholson, physician-in-chief at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, is quoted in the report as stating to KATU, “I’ve been in medicine going back 30 years now and never heard anything like this. And hopefully I never will again.”
The girl sustained third degree burns and is now recovering from the incident.
The cause of the fire was still unknown at the time of the report, and an investigation is ongoing.
Nicholson is further quoted as saying in a statement to ABCNews.com, “Our safety experts are working closely with the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office on its investigation… We anxiously await the their findings and will certainly make adjustments if the cause was preventable.”
