Kingsbury, NY — A logging accident killed a 66-year-old Warrensburg man Wednesday afternoon, January 25, 2012. The fatal work-related accident occurred off Aviator Way, just north of Hicks Road, at about 3:40 p.m., reported the PostStar.com.
According to reports, Maurice DeMars, 66, of Pratt Road, was cutting logs when a large log rolled from the top of an 18 to 20-log pile onto him, pinning him to the ground. DeMars was apparently alone at the header, which is where the logs are left once they were skidded out of the woods, when the accident occurred.
The log that fell on DeMars is reportedly over 2 feet in diameter.
DeMars was found about 75 yards from the road, only when the other loggers emerged from the woods with more logs for the pile. Officials believe DeMars may have been lying on the ground for up to an hour before co-workers discovered him.
The Washington County Coroner Ruth Scribner pronounced him dead at the scene. His body has since been taken to the Glen Falls Hospital for an autopsy.
Investigations into the work-related accident are underway. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to investigate.
