New Orleans, LA — Investigations are continuing to determine why a SUV was on a private road when it collided with an Amtrak train Tuesday afternoon, January 24, 2012, killing two people. The train accident occurred off Airline Highway near the Jefferson Parish and Saint Charles Parish line, on a private service road owned by the Eastern Jefferson Levee District, reported WWLTV.com.
The Kenner Police Department reported that Emmett Barreca, 56, of Norco, and his son, James Barreca, 32, of Norco were killed in the crash. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The train’s engineer stated that the SUV crossed in front of the train, causing the collision. The New Orleans-bound train, which originated from Chicago, reportedly tried to warn the motorists by sounding the horn several times before the vehicle crossed the intersection.
None of the 63 passengers or 8 crew members were injured.
Police are trying to determine why the men were on the private road and what exactly caused the accident. Investigations are underway.
