Hoyt Lakes, MN — An industrial accident at Mesabi Nugget hospitalized a worker on Monday, December 5, 2011, when he was hit in the head by a piece of metal. The workplace accident occurred around 11 a.m., reported WDIO.
According to reports, there was a large release of pressure that sounded much like an explosion, causing a 20 x 20 foot piece of metal to be blown out. The metal struck a worker, identified as Bradley Althaus, 42, of Silver Bay, in the head.
Althaus was reportedly taking down equipment for a maintenance shutdown when the pressure release occurred.
While the pressure release sounded like an explosion, investigators could not find any heat, flames, or charring.
Responding emergency crews rushed Althaus to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he is in good condition.
Investigations into the industrial accident are underway. It is unknown if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the workplace accident.
