Worcester, MA — An apartment house that partially collapsed during a fire, claimed the life of a firefighter and injured a second firefighter just before dawn on Thursday, December 8, 2011. Fire crews rushed to the house at 49 Arlington Street where 12 people were trapped inside the triple-decker house, reported The Boston Channel.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and rescued 11 people from the burning building, while one person remained trapped inside the house. Two Worcester firefighters rushed back into the building to try to save the last person, when they too became trapped.
The trapped resident managed to escape.
One firefighter was killed in the rescue attempt, when the building partially collapsed and trapped the two firefighters.
The deceased firefighter was identified as Jon Davies, a 17-year veteran of the department. The other firefighter was identified as Brain Carroll, a 14-year veteran. Davies and Carroll were partners.
Davis was located in the basement of the building, while Carroll was found on the first floor.
Fellow firefighters freed the two men, who were then taken to Worcester Medical Center. Davies was pronounced dead while at the hospital and Carroll is expected to survive.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
