Mullan, ID — A workplace accident at Lucky Friday Mine in Mullan killed one worker and injured another on Thursday, November 17, 2011 in northern Idaho. The mining accident occurred around 11:40 p.m. in the #4 Shaft, reported KXLY.
According to officials, two miners were injured in an accident during the construction of a new mine shaft doing routine work activities. Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office reports that the men were “drawn into material that was moving underneath them.” The workers reportedly were swallowed into a broken rock bin that was being excavated, when the bin had become plugged and they tried to free the materials.
Responding emergency crews rescued the two men and brought them to the surface, where an ambulance was waiting. The victims were rushed to Shoshone Medical Center for medical treatment. One worker was treated and released at the hospital, while another miner, Brandon Gray, 26, remained in critical condition.
On Saturday, Gray’s injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead, reported the Spokesman Review.
The two workers are reportedly employed by Cementation USA at the time of the accident.
Investigations into the fatal mining accident are underway.
