Brooklyn, NY — A school bus crashed outside a Brooklyn day care center Monday morning, November 7, 2011, when it collided with another vehicle in a nearby intersection. The collision occurred around 8:20 a.m., at the intersection of Rockaway Parkway and Avenue N in Canarsie, reported NY1.com.

According to the New York City Fire Department, the school bus and a SUV collided in the intersection, which propelled the bus onto the sidewalk and through an iron and brick fence, where it finally came to a stop outside of Little Andy’s Day Care.

The collision also sparked a small fire on the bus.

“A lot of flames in the front which I assume was from the gas tank. I heard an explosion. Flames kept moving back and it exploded another time,” said one witness to NY1. “Some civilians took some bricks from the fence to break the back window to open up the back door of the bus and we were checking underneath to see if there were any kids. No kids.”

Witness reported seeing the SUV running a red light before slamming into the bus. There were no children aboard the bus at the time of the wreck.

None of the children inside the day care were injured in the crash. Everyone was evacuated from the building safely.

The school bus driver was transported to Brookdale Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries. It is unknown if the SUV driver was injured.

The cause of the traffic accident is still under investigation.
