Worker Killed in Accident at Montana’s Stillwater Mine

Nye, MT — A mining accident at the a southern Montana precious metal mine left one worker dead Monday afternoon, October 31, 2011. The fatal workplace accident occurred about 1,200 feet underground at the Stillwater Mine near Nye, at around 3 p.m., reported the Billings Gazette.

The fatally injured worker was identified as 42-year-old Dale Alan Madson.

According to reports, Madson was driving an open cab truck underground when he went into a ditch and a rock bolt hit him in the neck.

It is unknown at this time what caused Madson to drive into a ditch. No other injuries were reported.

Madson was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. It was not reported if he was transported to a hospital prior to being declared dead.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are investigating the fatal mining accident.

Investigations are underway.
