Fort Collins, CO — A wheelchair-bound man was killed Thursday morning, October 13, 2011, when he was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross the busy Fort Collins thoroughfare. The fatal accident occurred around 7:55 a.m., when the man tried to cross the three lanes of East Harmony Road, reported TheDenverChannel.com.
According to Fort Collins police, the 54-year-old man in a motorized wheelchair crossed where there isn’t a marked crosswalk or traffic light for pedestrians.
As the man was attempting to cross the three lanes of traffic, an eastbound white Chevrolet Silverado was approaching Wheaton Drive on East Harmony when the truck hit the wheelchair-bound man.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until the family has been notified.
The truck driver, John Sollenberger, 39, of Fort Collins, was not injured in the crash.
Investigations into the accident are underway. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
No citations have been issued at this time.
