Columbia, SC — An accident at the South Carolina State Fair left six people with injuries Wednesday night, October 12, 2011, when a piece of metal broke off one of the carnival rides on opening night. The accident took place just after 8 p.m., on the Banazi ride at the fair, reports WIS News 10.
According to officials, as the ride was singing back and forth with five passengers on board, the footrest under one of the seats came loose and dropped down. This caused pieces of metal to be thrown into a group of people on the ride and one person who was on an adjacent Wave Swinger ride.
The malfunction left two people with bumps and bruises, three people with scratches from the metal pieces and injured one person who was hit in the arm by a piece of metal.
The injured people received medical attention at the fair’s first aid center and were released. No one was taken to the hospital.
The Banazi ride was shut down following the malfunction and is undergoing inspections.
Investigations into the carnival ride accident are underway.
