Marine Killed, 2 Injured in Crash on Yorktown Base

Yorktown, VA — A car hit a military formation at the Navel Weapons Station Yorktown, killing one Marine and injuring two others Tuesday morning, October 11, 2011. The fatal crash occurred along Halstead Road, between Gate 1 and Gate 3 at around 6:45 a.m., reported WAVY.com.

According to a the Navel Weapons Station Yorktown spokesperson, the Marines were running in formation along Halstead Road, which is apart of a physical training routine that happens every morning, when the vehicle hit the soldiers.

The Marines were all reportedly wearing reflective clothing.

The injured soldiers were rushed to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash. The Marine that was fatally injured was pronounced dead at Mary Immaculate Hospital after succumbing to their life-threatening injuries.

The victim’s identities are being withheld at this time.

The Marines are apart of the 2nd Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Company, Marine Security Force Regiment, a tenant command of the weapon station, reported WAVY.

Investigations into the crash are underway. It is not immediately known what caused the vehicle to hit the formation.
