On Thursday, September 1, 2011, at approximately 8:25 am, a motorcyclist was struck by a Ford Taurus in Brooklyn along Loring Avenue, according to information received by Brooklyn motorcycle accident attorney Jonathan C Reiter. The motorcyclist, 21-year-old Karam Rampersaud was then the victim of a second tragedy when his rescue was botched.
According to reports from NY1, the New York Post and other sources cited by Brooklyn motorcycle accident attorney Jonathan C Reiter, Rampersaud was struck while making a turn, by a 71-year-old driver and then became stuck beneath the vehicle. When police and firefighters began attempts to free the pinned motorcyclist, the car fell back on top of him, as stated by reports received by New York City injury attorney Reiter.
While police and other authorities reported there were wooden blocks in place beneath the vehicle to prevent it from falling directly onto Rampersaud, witness accounts state otherwise. A spokesman from the FDNY reported the group was reviewing its operations. A police source also reported Rampersaud already suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash – before the car crashed back onto him, according to Brooklyn injury attorney Jonathan C Reiter.
Rampersaud died after arriving at Brookdale hospital.
Questions are being raised as to whether the motorcyclist’s death was due to the trauma suffered during the collision or the fall of the vehicle during the subsequent rescue. Brooklyn injury attorney Jonathan C Reiter also mentioned that a witness recorded a video of the incident, which the family of the deceased is now trying to obtain.
Brooklyn motorcycle accident attorney Jonathan C Reiter points out that motorcycle riders are in a vulnerable position when sharing the road with cars, trucks and SUVs. Motorcycle riders have a substantially higher risk of sustaining injuries that could result in permanent disability or death if an accident occurs.
